In Kenya, the word "mental health" has historically been whispered, dismissed, or avoided entirely. For decades, young people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, or burnout have been told to "pray harder" or simply "be strong." The cost of this silence has been immense — and it's time for an honest conversation.
According to the World Health Organisation, depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of disability worldwide. A 2021 survey by the Kenya Medical Research Institute found that over 25% of young people experience significant mental health challenges — yet less than 10% seek or receive professional support.
Factors driving this crisis among Kenyan youth include:
Despite growing awareness, stigma remains the primary barrier to mental health support. Young people fear being labelled as "crazy" (kichaa), seen as weak, or alienating their families. This fear is not irrational — it reflects real social consequences that must be acknowledged even as we work to change them.
Mental health struggles are not a sign of weakness, lack of faith, or personal failure. They are health conditions that respond to support, treatment, and community — just like physical illness.
Breaking silence begins with one honest conversation. This might be a trusted friend, sibling, mentor, teacher, or religious leader. You don't have to explain everything at once — just begin.
Kenya has a growing number of mental health resources. Befrienders Kenya offers a free confidential helpline: 0722 178 177. Mathare Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital have psychiatry and psychology services. Many private counsellors now offer sliding-scale fees.
Our Youth Empowerment Program includes mental health awareness sessions in every cohort, access to peer support circles, and connections to counselling resources for graduates who need additional support. We build a learning environment that is psychologically safe and affirming.
"I nearly dropped out of the program in week three. I was struggling badly — financially, emotionally, with everything. The SkillUp team checked in on me, connected me with support, and helped me keep going." — Youth Program Graduate
